Like most Silent Hill games, The Room is mostly atmosphere and very little action. This has been a point of both praise and criticism for the series as a whole, for me personally, I think that’s what makes Silent Hill so great, as the atmosphere really effects the players mood. While there are definite cheap scares (various monsters jump out unexpectedly from behind corners etc.) most of the game is psychologically disturbing, as you try to cope with the disgustingly surreal environments and the even more bizarre creatures you encounter. Check the screenshot above, I know when Keith and I played this when we lived together in first year he actually screamed out loud at the sight of it. I didn’t, of course, but I’m not a bitch. Word up.
The Room also has some of the most unsettling subplots of the series, as they often revolve around the abuse of small children. For instance, one area which you have to traverse is a children’s prison, and as you discover more of the level, you pick up journals that some of the children have kept which document various abuses they endure at the hands of guards and prison psychologists, and sometimes their suicide notes. Happy stuff.
